Initial Impressions
Initially, I wondered if this journal would be relevant to me, considering the amount of sewing I do and the years of experience I have under my belt. However, my doubts were short-lived. This journal feels like a fabulous addition to anyone’s sewing room, regardless of experience or the types of projects you're used to sewing. There truly is something here for everyone.
A New Direction from Debbie's Usual Books
This journal is quite different from Debbie’s usual pattern books, and it’s a very welcome addition to her library of publications.
Customisation and Practical Features
What stands out immediately upon opening this journal is the capacity to customise it and truly make it your own. It includes a handy elastic strap to secure any loose samples you might want to add, which will become an invaluable feature for any future projects. The hardback cover adds to its durability, making it far more robust compared to other journals on the market.
Thoughtful Layout and Useful Information
The layout has been well thought out, covering everything from recognising different fabrics and their best uses, to selecting the appropriate needle for the task at hand. It even includes a helpful section on measuring and recording your own body size, which is a fantastic resource for more precise project planning.
Project Pages and Potential for Expansion
There are plenty of project pages included in the journal. My only minor critique is that it would be even more versatile if it were designed as a ring binder, allowing you to easily add extra pages for both projects and fabric samples as needed.
Personal Touches and Humour
I love how Debbie has infused the journal with light-hearted poems and anecdotes from her own needlecraft experiences. These humorous snippets add a personal touch, making the journal not only practical but also enjoyable to use.
Swatches and Project Tracking
One of my favourite sections is the dedicated space for swatches, along with details like cost and where the fabric was purchased. If you're anything like me, you’ll often forget these details, so having a record makes it much easier to repeat projects later on.
A Valuable Reference for Projects
Being able to record all the details for different projects is incredibly helpful, especially for someone like me who creates a variety of items for customers. It becomes an invaluable reference, allowing you to easily search for previous customer orders.
Sewing Machine Section
The section on sewing machines is another great feature. One small improvement would be the addition of space to note service and maintenance dates.
A Perfect Gift for Sewers
This journal would make an ideal gift for any friend or relative who sews, or even a treat for yourself. There’s so much inspiration within its pages for new sewers and experienced ones alike, particularly those who might have lost a bit of their sewing ‘mojo’.
Final Thoughts
Thank you, Debbie, for understanding what we ‘sewers’ really need in a practical, inspiring, and beautifully crafted journal.
