Crafting Memory Bears to Treasure

Memory bears are truly special creations, each one made from fabrics and items that carry deep personal meaning—from beloved school uniforms and military attire to wedding dresses, christening gowns, or even cherished jewellery and badges. Whether it’s a collection of ties or a child’s first outfit, these precious items can be transformed into a Bear that holds a lifetime of memories in its seams. The wonderful thing is, you don’t need a large amount of fabric to make it possible!

For those interested in crafting their own Memory Bear, this project invites both creativity and careful planning. Thoughtfully selecting the materials and envisioning the details—like incorporating pin badges, unique textures, or a particular embroidery—makes each Bear truly one of a kind. Memory Bears can be a more intricate project, with elements that require precision, such as positioning patches or attaching keepsakes like cufflinks or trinkets, but the result is a meaningful keepsake made with your own hands.

In this section, we’ll share inspiring stories, helpful tips, and practical approaches for creating a Memory Bear—from concept to fabric selection and sewing techniques. Whether you choose to make it yourself or would like us to bring your vision to life, we’re here to help every step of the way.

Choosing Materials for Your Memory Bear

The best material for a Memory Bear is whatever holds meaning for you. From shirts and wedding dresses to military uniforms, we’ve used it all! Generally, a few items of clothing work beautifully, but our Memory Quilts can include up to 100 pieces.

Meet Gordon Bear - The Inspiration behind Family Comforts

Gordan Bear 1.jpg

Gordon Bear, the very first Memory Bear created here at Family Comforts, holds a special place in our hearts. Crafted in honour of Sandi’s father, Gordan.

Gordon Bear embodies the warmth, style, and spirit of a cherished generation. Made from the ties he wore, including one for Sandi’s sister’s wedding, this distinguished Bear captures the essence of a true gentleman who valued a classic shirt and tie—an honour to his generation and service at Bletchley Park during WWII.

Though he’s often off on globe-trotting adventures, Gordon Bear occasionally stops by to say hello, inspiring us to create heartfelt keepsakes that celebrate family and memory.

Sandi tells us a bit more about the birth of Gordon in this inspiring blog.

Paul’s Memory Bear: A Career of Service

Paul’s Memory Bear honours an impressive 37-year career in the Royal Navy, where he rose from Medical Branch rating to Lieutenant Commander. Throughout his service, Paul dedicated himself to providing medical support in some of the most challenging operations, including the Falklands War—where he earned a Mention in Dispatches for bravery.

During Covid lockdown, Paul came across medals and badges from his career. Wanting a special keepsake for his granddaughter, he reached out to Family Comforts to create a Memory Bear stitched from his uniform, commemorating his lifelong commitment to service.

This Bear, uniquely crafted from the very fabric of his career, serves as a cherished reminder of his dedication and as a legacy for future generations.
