Crafting Comforts
Edition 12
New Year, New Makes

Happy New Year, and welcome to January at Family Comforts

A New Year of Comfort and Creativity

January brings a natural sense of reset, a chance to pause, refocus and begin again with intention. At Family Comforts, that means continuing to design with care, celebrating craftsmanship, and creating pieces rooted in comfort, beauty and longevity.

As we step into the year ahead, I’m focusing on what this brand does best: thoughtful design, meaningful making, and timeless pieces with warmth and character at their heart. There are many carefully considered ideas and designs to share over the coming months, and I’m very much looking forward to bringing them to you.

Thank you for being part of the Family Comforts story. I’m delighted to have you with me as the year unfolds.

For me, January often brings a quieter kind of sorting. Drawers are opened, wardrobes revisited, and clothing resurfaces that hasn’t been worn for years-not because it isn’t loved, but because it holds memories.

Capturing memories

For many, this is when Memory Bears come into focus.

Transforming a cherished garment into a memory keepsake-be it a bear or a quilt-isn’t about holding on to clutter. It’s about choosing what truly matters. A favourite shirt, a well-worn jumper, a piece tied to a person or a moment, reshaped into something comforting and lasting.

It’s a gentle way to make space without loss.
A way to honour memories rather than pack them away.
And a reminder that letting go doesn’t have to mean saying goodbye.

2026 Bag Trends and Why Timeless Handmade Bags Always Wins

If you saw me on Sewing Street recently, you’ll know we explored bag trends for 2026. I’ve gathered those ideas, and expanded on them, in this month’s blog, looking at how trends are evolving and why timeless, thoughtfully made bags sit so comfortably within them.

A lovely read with a cup of tea, and a reassuring reminder that good design never goes out of style.

P.S. I’d love to know – what has inspired you to create a sewing project. Hit reply and tell me!

Pattern of the Month - Scrappy Bear – January Special

We’re starting the year with colour, creativity and a project full of promise. Our much-loved Scrappy Bear Pattern is January’s featured make, and to celebrate, I’m offering:

  • 10% off the Scrappy Bear Pattern (printed or digital)

  • 10% off Scrappy Bear Finishing Kits - with many variants to pick from (discount has already been applied across prices shown)

This is a wonderful project if you’re looking for:

  • a comforting, satisfying make

  • a gentle confidence boost

  • a meaningful way to use treasured fabric pieces

Why choose a finishing kit?

Our Scrappy Bear Finishing Kits include all the essential components needed to complete your bear, carefully selected to work beautifully with the pattern. They remove guesswork, save time, and ensure your finished bear has the structure and professional finish it deserves. All you need extra is your material and some toy stuffing.

  • It’s a simple way to enjoy the making process with confidence, knowing everything you need is to hand.

  • A joyful way to begin your creative year.

Scrappy Bear- Tip of the Month

When making a Scrappy Bear, think in terms of tone rather than exact colour. Before you begin, loosely group your fabrics into light, medium, and dark values. Spreading these tones evenly across the bear helps the finished piece feel balanced and cohesive, even when working with a wide mix of prints and textures. I usually start with lighter tones for the face and the darker tones and colours on the legs, but that’s just my preference.

I also like to keep the bear roughly symmetrical from left to right. Using similar tones or fabric weights on each side helps the design feel intentional and calm, while still allowing for plenty of scrappy character and personality.

Finally, consider the weight of your fabrics as you go. Lighter or softer materials often benefit from a little interfacing to give structure and durability, while heavier fabrics may only need a light interfacing. Adjusting this as you build ensures your bear holds its shape beautifully and feels just as good to cuddle as it does to admire.

These small, thoughtful choices make all the difference, adding a polished, well-finished look without ever losing the charm that makes a Scrappy Bear so special.

Meet Aurelius Blue

In a little sewing room where fabrics whisper their memories and threads weave gentle magic, a very special bear came to life.

Her name is Aurelius Blue, a golden-hearted companion created to celebrate the first anniversary of our Family Comforts website.

Aurelius was lovingly crafted from a blend of cherished prints and velvety soft fabrics, chosen for the stories they remind us of: cosy evenings, handwritten letters, and the comforting weight of a well-loved quilt. Her ears bloom with golden floral fabric, and her paws are finished with delicate lace, a nod to the heirlooms passed tenderly from one generation to the next.

Her deep blue body reflects calm skies and quiet moments, those times when a cup of tea, a slow breath, and a familiar friend can make everything feel just a little lighter. The name Aurelius, meaning “the golden one,” echoes in her shimmering ribbon and the warmth she’s ready to share with the world.

She is more than fabric and thread, she’s a symbol of gratitude. For every customer, every maker, every story shared and sewn with us.

She carries just one wish in her heart:

“May the home I find be one where memories are treasured and comfort is always close.”

Tools of the Month – Scrappy Bear Edition

When making a Scrappy Bear, a few well-chosen tools can make the whole process easier, neater, and far more enjoyable. These are three tools I reach for regularly when working on scrappy patterns, memory keepsakes and bears.

Wonder Clips (Pack of 100)

Scrappy Bear making often involves layers, mixed fabric weights, and small curved sections. I much prefer using Wonder Clips at this stage, as they hold everything securely without distorting delicate or thicker fabrics.

They’re especially useful when joining uneven seams or working with keepsake materials where pins aren’t ideal. Having a good-sized pack means you can clip generously and sew with confidence.

Tailor’s Ham & Seam Roll Set

This is one of those tools that quietly transforms the finish of your work. Pressing curved seams properly is key to achieving a beautifully shaped Scrappy Bear, and a tailor’s ham allows you to press without flattening the form.

The seam roll is just as useful for narrower areas like limbs and smaller sections. Together, they help your bear hold its shape and look well-finished from every angle.

Prym Love Corner & Edge Shaper

A simple but invaluable tool when working with small pieces and tight corners. I use this regularly to gently push out seams, paws, ears, and facial details without stressing the fabric.

It’s particularly helpful when working with scrappy combinations or memory fabrics where you want definition without risking damage. A small tool, but one that makes a noticeable difference.

Useful for holding down small areas when sewing too.

If you choose to buy through these links, it helps support Family Comforts at no extra cost to you.

Introducing Our Spring Block Pattern

As Spring is around the corner a gentle way to refresh for your home

Spring is the perfect time to freshen up your home without redecorating or making major changes. A new cushion, table runner, or small quilt can instantly lift a room, adding colour, texture, and a sense of seasonal renewal.

Our Spring Block Pattern is designed with exactly that in mind. It’s a versatile, satisfying make that works beautifully for home projects both large and small, whether you’re creating a single statement cushion, a cheerful table runner, or building towards a quilt that can be brought out year after year.

A simple change, thoughtfully made, can make your home feel lighter, brighter, and ready for the season ahead.

The pattern includes a colouring sheet, which makes it ideal to get all your scrap pieces of material out and see what they look like before sewing them together. This pattern would also work well as a memory quilt, using items like ties, shirts, t-shirts or blouses.

Let’s Sew Together – Book Me for a Workshop, Course or Creative Talk!

Did you know I run friendly, hands-on sewing courses tailored to suit all levels, from beginners finding their way with a needle, to seasoned stitchers looking for fresh inspiration? My workshops are ideal for quilt groups, independent fabric shops, local sewing clubs, and even small groups of friends who love to sew together. I also offer inspiring talks for the WI and other community groups, sharing stories from behind the seams of my design journey (with a few cheeky bears thrown in for good measure!). If you’d like to bring some stitching magic to your group, event or venue, I’d love to chat. Let’s create something special together!

Top Tip:

When booking a sewing workshop, think about the projects your group will enjoy most—whether it’s learning a new technique, making a keepsake, or tackling a skill you’ve always wanted to master. Tailoring the theme to your group makes the day even more inspiring and memorable.

Consider this.....

January doesn’t need grand resolutions. Sometimes the quiet act of making- stitch by stitch- is enough. A small project, a gentle tidy, a return to fabric you’ve been saving. Let the month unfold slowly, and give yourself permission to create for the comfort of it.
