Crafting with Heart: Inspiration from the Familiar and the Beloved

Updated: Nov 11

Hello, I'm Sandi Millichip-Massocchi, a bear artist, designer, and devoted crafter with over 50 years of crafting experience creating unique keepsakes that families treasure. Today, I want to share not only the essence of our craft but also a little bit about my personal journey into the world of memory bears and bespoke crafting.

Art Nouveau style illustration inspired by Klimt, featuring an elegant woman with intricate golden patterns and surrounded by an array of plush bears with soft swirl designs, set against a richly decorated background resonant of the era.

A Tribute to My Dad

My passion for memory bears was inspired by one of the most precious people in my life—my caring, loving, wonderful Dad. He lived with us for the last six years of his life, and I had the honour of caring for him during his final four years. It was hands down the best job I’ve ever done, and nothing will come close to it.

Wanting a keepsake to remind me of my Dad, who always loved his ties, I designed what I consider the smartest bear in the UK, in his memory. Having served at Bletchley Park during WWII, he was part of a generation for whom a shirt, tie, and jacket were de rigueur. Thus, 'Gordon Bear' was born—not only made from the ties he wore but also proudly wearing the tie once worn at my sister's wedding and other memorable occasions.

The Art of Transforming Memories

Memory bears are crafted from materials that might otherwise remain tucked away in a cupboard or attic. These fabrics are imbued with stories and memories—be it baby clothes, school uniforms, or a loved one's favourite outfit. I use these pieces to create beautiful family comforts—bears, bunnies, unicorns, dinosaurs, horses, cats, foxes, dogs, or elephants—each sewn together with the memories you shared and the love you treasure.

Typically, bears are made out of at least 20 pieces, allowing you to use as many or as few different materials as you like. I personally recommend 4-8 pieces of adult clothing, 6-10 pieces for baby clothes, giving me the ability to make your family comfort a patchwork of special memories.

If you only have 1 special item of clothing, that too can be made into something beautiful.

Here are just some of the lovely Memory Bears I've had the pleasure of making.

Personal Touches in Every Creation

Every animal I design takes on the personality of the loved one they represent. During our design consultations, I gather as much information as I can about the person whose memories I am encapsulating into the family comfort. Each one is unique, handmade, and designed with a keen eye on complementary fabrics, emblems, and features from the materials.

A Client's Story

Here’s what one client said about my work:

"I couldn't believe that such a beautiful bear could be made from the jacket of my late husband. Sandi listened to my story, understood that I wanted enough bears for each of the grandchildren and when I collected them to take them to their 'forever home' each of the bears had an individual representation of their grandad. Mine wears a waistcoat made out of the suit from our diamond wedding anniversary, and I talk to him every day."

Gordan Bear: Our Travelling Companion

Gordan Bear travels everywhere with us (hubby Andy and I) and has become quite the 'superstar', sparking a lot of interest wherever we go. We have many images of him living the high life on our adventures together.

The Joy of Crafting

I take great pride and am honoured when commissioned to design and create any of these animals. As I build, I do talk to them, saying hello, helping them come alive in the workshop.

Join me as we continue to explore the art of crafting, where every creation is a homage to memories, and every fabric tells a story. Stay tuned for more tales from behind the seams, tips for crafters, and glimpses into the heart of our craft.

In a world full of mass-produced goods, something handcrafted with love offers not just decoration, but a piece of the soul.
